How to open a WPD file without WordPerfect
A .wpd file is usually a WordPerfect document. You have several ways to read it on Windows or turn it into a Word document. Keep a copy of the original before converting.
Choose a method
| Method | File upload | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Ask the sender for Word or PDF | No new conversion service | One file, sender available |
| LibreOffice Writer | Not needed for local conversion | Free editing and conversion |
| WPD File Viewer by SoyaTools | No | Focused viewing; Pro export |
| WordPerfect, if available | Not needed for local conversion | Checking the original layout |
| An online converter | Yes | Files you are allowed to upload |
1. Ask the sender for Word or PDF
If the sender still uses WordPerfect, ask for a Word-compatible copy for editing, or a PDF for reading. Ask them to review the converted file before sending it. Keep the original .wpd too.
2. Open and convert with LibreOffice
LibreOffice is a free desktop office suite. Its official file format guide lists WordPerfect documents as an input format and .docx as an output format.
- Install LibreOffice from its official website.
- In Writer, choose File → Open and select your .wpd file.
- Review the text and layout, then use File → Save As and choose Word (.docx). For a reading copy, export as PDF.
Check tables, footnotes and images after conversion. Compatibility depends on the file; importing is not a promise of identical formatting.
3. Use WPD File Viewer
Our WPD File Viewer is one option for Windows users who want a focused reader. Opening, page navigation, zoom and text copying are free. A one-time Pro upgrade adds Word (.docx) export, PDF export with page selection, batch Word/PDF conversion, PNG export and printing. Files are processed on your PC.
It cannot edit documents or open password-protected files. Complex tables, footnotes and picture positions can differ from the original. The tested scope includes WordPerfect 4.2, 5.x and 6.x-or-later samples and some Mac files; it does not guarantee every document will open.
4. Use WordPerfect when the original layout matters
If you or the sender already have a compatible copy, open the document in WordPerfect and use its available save/export options. Check supported formats in the official product information. A matching original application is useful for checking conversion differences; features and pricing depend on the edition.
5. Consider an online converter
Online services can accept .wpd files, but the document leaves your PC. Read the service's privacy and retention terms and confirm that you are allowed to upload the file. For confidential documents, choose a local method.
How to convert WPD to Word
For a free route, open the document in LibreOffice Writer and save a new .docx copy. With WPD File Viewer, open it and choose Save as Word (Pro). Then open that .docx in Word to edit it. Do not rename .wpd to .docx: changing the extension does not convert the contents.
If a file will not open
- Check whether it is empty or incomplete and ask for another copy.
- For password protection, ask the owner to unlock it in compatible original software or send an unprotected export. WPD File Viewer cannot remove passwords.
- Try another local importer and compare the output. Preserve the original.
